Maya Angelou was a poet, author, performer, and civil rights activist who inspired the world to action with her words.

Born Marguerite Ann Johnson, she was given the nickname “Maya” by her older brother. After a childhood trauma left Maya silent for six years, she reclaimed her voice and made it into a megaphone for healing and truth. 

Maya was brought to worldwide acclaim when her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was published. Her many accomplishments as a writer, poet, essayist, and performer earned her multiple awards and honors. In fact, she was the first African American woman to be featured on the U.S. quarter!
