Cool Off and Get Soaked With These Sprinkler Games

Sure, you could use the sprinkler to water the grass. But wouldn't you rather use it for something more fun?

Sprinklers are the MVP of backyard water toys. Sure, they were originally made to keep the grass nice and green, but we all know sprinklers are for way more than that. Taking turns running through the spray is the go-to sprinkler game, but there’s much more you can do with a sprinkler to cool down and have fun. We've shared some of our favorite sprinkler games below to keep you busy (and soaking wet!) all summer long!

1. Sprinkler Rides

Why run through a sprinkler when you can ride through a sprinkler? With a little relocation of your sprinkler, you can do just that. Take your sprinkler to the driveway or the patio and grab your bike or scooter and helmet (don't worry, it will quickly dry!). Then let the water start flowing and ride away.

2. Sprinkler Baseball

Sure, you could play a baseball game in a hot field on a summer day ... or you could add a sprinkler to the mix for an instant cool down! Since everything will get pretty wet, you'll probably want to switch out the typical gear for a plastic ball and bat. Take the game to the next level by subbing in a slip 'n slide for one of the baselines! Call the remix of the game "Sprinkler Ball" and give the MLB a true run for their money.

3. Sprinkler Animal Walks

It's always fun to run through a sprinkler, but it's even more fun to jump, waddle, and crawl through the sprinkler just like your favorite animal. Turn on your sprinkler and take turns shouting out different animals. With each animal, challenge yourself to move through the sprinkler just like the animal would. See if you can make it through waddling like a penguin, slithering like a snake, or crawling just like a crab.

4. Sprinkler Freeze Dance

Stay cool and show off your best moves at the same time with a game of sprinkler freeze dance. Stick to the classic rules and grab an adult to be in charge of the music. When the music stops, strike a pose — just don't let the water from the sprinkler distract you! Tired of the classic game? Switch it up and let the sprinkler dictate the rules. Play with the same structure, but instead of freezing at the music, freeze when you get hit by the sprinkler and see how long you can stay still!

5. Swing Set Waterpark

Have a swing set in your backyard? With one simple trick, you can now have a waterpark in your backyard too! Simply move your sprinkler over to the swing set for an instant remodel. Just turn on the hose and watch the instant transformation right before your eyes. The swing set will look just like a sprayground and waterslide in no time.

6. Sprinkler Obstacle Course

I know the sprinkler obstacle course isn't an Olympic sport, but don't you think it should be? While we try to make that happen, keep your skills sharp and train all summer long with a course right in your backyard. Set up your sprinkler and run through the pool noodle tunnel, jump through the hula hoops, and slide down the slip n' slide to cross the finish line. By the end of the summer, you'll know the course like the back of your hand.

7. Water Limbo

Up for a challenge? Then give water limbo a shot! Water limbo basically works just like the limbo dance game that you would play inside, but instead of going under a stick or pole, you have to go under (or over!) the sprinkler's spray without getting wet. There are no rules when it comes to crossing — just keep dry to stay in the game. Don't worry if it takes you a few tries to get the hang of it — we're not even sure Elastigirl would get it on the first try!

8. Sprinkler Musical Chairs

The classic game of musical chairs get a seasonal upgrade with this exciting twist. Instead of listening to the music for when to stop, you'll be looking out for the sprinkler. Grab an adult and ask them to be in charge of turning the sprinkler on and off. When the sprinkler is on, move around the chairs just like you would when the music is on. When the water stops flowing, grab a seat as fast as you can. The last one standing is crowned the sprinkler musical chairs champion!

9. Classic Backyard Games ... But With a Sprinkler!

For when it's too hot to think of a creative setup in the backyard, stick to classic backyard games and just turn the sprinkler on high. The addition of water will make nostalgic outdoor games like red light green light, duck duck goose, and tag so much better.

10. Sprinkler Dance Party

A dance floor can be anywhere you want — including your backyard with the sprinkler blasting. Pull out your waterproof bluetooth speaker and bust out your best dance moves under the water and cool off while you shake it off. Practice classic moves like the twist, the chicken dance, and of course, the sprinkler. You'll see life imitate art right before your eyes!

11. Sprinkler Jump Rope

Jumping rope on dry land is fun and all, but jumping rope through a sprinkler is awesome! Take your jump rope and skip right through the stream of water. If you've got some friends or siblings around, grab a bigger jump rope (or even two for double dutch!) and take turns swinging and jumping through the refreshing stream. Sing your favorite jump rope rhymes and see if you can make it through the whole song while the water cools you down.
