What to Watch With Your Family This June

As temperatures go up, hunker down as a fam with these supercool streaming and theatrical releases.

This June, get ready for new chapters of popular franchises, like the epic action flick Jurassic World Dominion, and Lightyear, the highly-anticipated origin story of Toy Story’s beloved astronaut. Throw in some superhero stories, from Ms. Marvel to the new season of The Umbrella Academy, and some summer love stories, like The Summer I Turned Pretty, and you’ve got yourself a packed watchlist.

And don’t forget that June is also LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, making it the perfect opportunity to tune into everything from the Pixar short Out to the ultimate rom com Love, Simon to the documentary The Most Dangerous Year. Here are our picks for the best family shows and movies to watch in June!

The Prom

It’s a prom com! It’s a musical! It’s a moving LGBTQ+ story of courage triumphing over bigotry! A star-studded cast, including Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and James Corden, play Broadway stars fresh off a flop, who band together to save prom for a gay high school senior and her girlfriend. Bring on the corsages and disco balls! (Rated PG-13)

Love, Simon

In the mood for a heart-melting rom com? An adaptation of the YA novel Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Love, Simon follows a closeted high school senior who falls for a mysterious beau through an online correspondence — and comes out in the process. (Rated PG-13)

Ms. Marvel

Superhero fans, take note: there’s a new kid in town. Kamala Khan’s a Muslim-American teen living in Jersey City, totally obsessed with Captain Marvel, and struggling to find her place in school. But when she gets superpowers herself, the fantasyland she’s been dreaming of becomes a (dangerous! thrilling!) reality.

Lightyear

Get pumped for the sci-fi origin story of Toy Story’s favorite astronaut, Buzz Lightyear. The movie focuses on a young Lightyear, voiced by Chris Evans, as he travels through space (and time!) to get his crew home after running into a bit of galactic trouble. To infinity ... and beyond! (Rated PG)

Jurassic World Dominion

The Jurassic Park franchise is going out with bang, not a whimper. This final installment in the series is jam-packed with everything you loved about the first movies: bloodthirsty dinosaurs, valiant heroes, and edge-of-your-seat suspense. Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill are back, too, reprising their original roles. Beware: there are jump scares a-plenty, so hold on tight to your popcorn. (Rated PG-13)

Out

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated short, Out is the first Pixar film to feature a gay main character and a same-sex kiss. It tells the story of Greg, a man who wants to come out to his parents but can’t seem to find the words – until a magical intervention from his dog does the trick. (Rated PG)

The Lost Girls

Yes, it’s a Peter Pan remake but no, it’s nothing like the ones you’ve seen before. This flick’s all about the ladies, focusing on Wendy and the Darling women who came before (and after) her, and fell under Peter’s spell. When the movie’s over, you’ll have enough happy thoughts to take to the skies (pixie dust not included). (Recommended for ages 10 and up)

The Umbrella Academy Season 3

Umbrella Academy fans can breathe a sigh of relief — the much-anticipated third season has arrived, and it is raining drama. Just when you think the apocalypse is behind you, there’s another one just around the corner. Rest assured this band of superhero siblings will be busy averting disaster once more.  (Recommended for teens and up)

The Summer I Turned Pretty

Two brothers. One juicy love triangle. Need we say more? Based on the New York Times bestselling book by Jenny Han of To All the Boys I've Loved Before fame, this new series follows teenager Belly over the course of one transformative summer where she comes into her own and finds love along the way. Beach + boys = binge-worthy TV. (Rated TV PG)

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

Adorableness alert! Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is cuteness incarnate. Based on the series of 2010 shorts that captured the hearts of kids and parents alike, this mockumentary tells the story of Dean, a documentarian living in an AirBnB, where he meets the eponymous shell with shoes on (and one large googly eye). (Rated PG)
