You can’t beat a movie night when it comes to making a night at home as a family memorable and fun for everyone. Gathering around the TV and enjoying a comedy or a thought-provoking movie is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, and what goes better with that than popcorn?
That said, movie night popcorn doesn’t just have to be the same old buttered stuff you’ve been putting in the microwave since the ‘80s. Here are some ridiculously yummy recipes that are super fun to make and will take your next movie night to a new level!
Two Sisters Crafting
This recipe for Grinch Popcorn from Two Sisters Crafting is perfect for a holiday movie viewing party, whether you’re watching The Grinch or not. And it couldn’t be simpler! Just start with some melted butter and add mini marshmallows until they melt and combine. From there, add a little yellow food coloring and a tiny bit of blue to create a green color that looks just like the iconic Christmas grump.
Pour that mixture over 10 cups of popcorn that you’ve already salted, spread it out on a baking sheet and drizzle any remaining marshmallow mixture on top, and add in some red M&Ms and more mini marshmallows. All you have to do from there is let it cool, and you’ve got yourself a delicious treat that anyone would touch with a 39-and-a-half foot pole!
Who doesn’t love a sweet, cinnamon-y churro? This recipe for Churros popcorn from Everyday Reading gives you all the flavor of the classic treat without the deep fried dough, and it couldn’t be easier to make.
This fantastic recipe is as simple as popping some popcorn (about 10-12 cups) and putting it in a large mixing bowl. Meanwhile, melt four tablespoons of butter and add a third of a cup of brown sugar and two tablespoons of light corn syrup. Once that’s combined, let it cook briefly at a low boil and add baking soda and vanilla.
Once that’s done, mix together some cinnamon and granulated sugar in a separate bowl. Pour the butter and brown sugar mixture over the popcorn, making sure to coat everything evenly. Finally, add the cinnamon and sugar mixture to the newly-coated popcorn, and enjoy!
Pig Candy Popcorn
Alexandra Ramos, Always Order Dessert
Two words: bacon and chocolate. If you haven’t tried it, we couldn’t recommend it more. What better way to give this classic combo a shot by adding it to your movie night snack? This brilliant Pig Candy Popcorn recipe from Always Order Dessert is great for families who like a little kick to their sweetness, too.
First, you’ll want to cook some bacon in a pan with a bit of oil, until the bacon is crispy but not burned. Then, add a few popcorn kernels to that pan once the bacon is plated, and cook those with a lid on until they pop. Make sure to shake it continuously! Add the rest of the popcorn kernels and do the same, then transfer the corn to a large bowl.
From there, add cayenne pepper, paprika, and black pepper and coat it all evenly with the popcorn. Cut or crumble the bacon and add it to the seasoned popcorn, tossing it all together to coat it evenly. Finally, add in some chocolate chips! For the salty and sweet lovers in your family, this one is sure to be a new favorite.
Yes, you read that right: Pizza. Popcorn.
This recipe takes a bit more time and attention to get it right, but boy is it worth it. First, you’ll want to preheat your oven to 200 degrees, and grab a baking sheet. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper, coat with cooking spray, and proceed to spread a six ounce can of tomato paste onto the baking sheet until it’s covered in a thin layer.
Bake the paste until the red color deepens and it looks and feels like a fruit leather. This will take about two hours, but you can always start this before dinner so you’ve got plenty of time to prepare before movie night begins. Once the paste is cooked, let it cool and then tear it up into very small pieces. Add those pieces gradually to a spice grinder, making batches of ground tomato.
Next, you’ll want to add some parmesan cheese, oregano, red pepper flakes, and garlic salt to the spice grinder and grind it all together with the ground paste. Finally, make some popcorn on the stovetop with olive or vegetable oil—cooking with the lid on and shaking until it’s all popped. Add melted butter along with two tablespoons of the pizza spice mixture you’ve created, coat evenly and enjoy the most amazing savory popcorn you’ve ever had.
Cookies and Cream Popcorn
Here’s one that you’ll be talking about for a long time to come. You may want to be careful with how often you make this recipe for Cookies and Cream Popcorn from Sweet Tooth; you might not be able to pay attention to the actual movie. It’s that good.
What’s even better about this delicious recipe is that it’s probably the easiest to make! All you’ll need is one bag of popped popcorn, 12 oreos, and six ounces of vanilla candy melts. Crush the oreos up and mix it in with your popcorn, making sure to coat evenly. Then, melt the vanilla candy in the microwave in 30-second intervals (be sure to mix well in between so it melts evenly without burning).
Once your candy melts are melted down, take half of that mixture and coat the popcorn with it. Be sure to coat evenly, of course! Finally, add the rest of the candy melt mixture and coat the oreo-covered popcorn until it’s all totally covered with sweet goodness. Spread it out on a baking sheet and let it set for about 20 minutes before digging in.
